Rosacea, (roh-ZAY-sha) is a common skin disease that causes redness and swelling on the face. It is often referred to as "adult acne,". Rosacea cannot be cured, but with proper treatment it can be controlled. Rosacea usually develops over a long period of time. It is estimated that about 14 million Americans have rosacea.

How does Rosacea occur?

In many cases rosacea begins as a tendency to flush or blush easily. Rosacea then progresses to persistent redness in the center of the face that may gradually involve the cheeks, forehead, chin, and nose. Rosacea also may involve the ears, chest and back. As rosacea progresses, small blood vessels and tiny pimples begin to appear on and around the reddened area. Blackheads are not characteristics of rosacea.

What causes Rosacea?

The exact cause of rosacea is unknown.

What are the Symptoms of Rosacea?

Some of the most common symptoms of early stages of rosacea are: Redness on the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead. Small visible blood vessels on the face. Bumps or pimples on the face. Watery or irritated eyes. Symptoms for advanced stages include: enlarged red nose, puffy cheeks and thick bumps on the lower half of the nose and nearby cheeks.

Treatment Options for Rosacea

A Dermatologists will construct a treatment that best fits each individual. The most common treatments are: Topical medications such as gels and creams may be prescribed by a dermatologist.

Oral antibiotic

Cortisone creams

Laser surgery

 

PhotoFacial, which is also known sometimes as intense pulsed light therapy, can be used to treat a variety of skin conditions. It is typically used on the face, neck, and/or chest to treat facial erythema (redness) and flushing, and remedy damage caused by sun overexposure. PhotoFacial can also help eliminate the redness and flushing of rosacea. Treatment only takes 15 to 30 minutes and isn't painful.

So what happens after PhotoFacial? You will first see a gradual decrease in redness. The treated skin will feel softer and vary less in tone. Fine lines and wrinkles will also improve, along with fading of pigmentation and age spots and a reduction in pore size. Rosacea sufferers will see a marked reduction in breakouts, and in some cases may be able to decrease or discontinue their medication.
