Tumescent Liposuction

Tumescent liposuction is a local anesthetic technique for body sculpting that has proven to have a lot of advantages over traditional liposuction. The main advantages of tumescent liposuction are that it is safer and provides excellent cosmetic results.

Tumescent Liposuction Overview

The tumescent liposuction technique was created by Dermatologist Jeffery Klein, MD. Tumescent liposuction is the most important advancement in liposuction and body sculpting surgery since it was introduced in the early 1980s.

This lipo technique produces more natural and smoother looking results while greatly decreasing risk, costs and postoperative discomfort since it only uses local anesthesia. Tumescent liposuction surgery is performed as a one-day outpatient procedure where there is minimal downtime.

How It Works

With the tumescent liposuction technique, the lipo surgeon injects a solution into the fatty tissue to be removed that anesthetizes the area. This solution causes the treated area to become tumescent (swollen and firm), which enables the liposuction surgeon to suck out the fatty tissue more accurately, gently and uniformly, and therefore produce smoother and natural looking results.

A thin metal tube called cannula; is inserted through a tiny incision in an inconspicuous body location. During surgery the patient is awake which minimizes the risks but will not feel pain since he or she is sedated.

The cannulas or tubes used in this technique to suck out the fat are very thin and minimize the amount of trauma produced. The incision sites usually heal are hardly noticeable and there is minimal scarring.

With tumescent liposuction patients do not need general anesthesia.

During surgery patients are relaxed and comfortable. Most patients compare the feeling during surgery to a deep tissue massage. Post-operative discomfort is significantly reduced since the local anesthesia is usually effective for 8-16 hours after surgery.

Tumescent liposuction reduces recovery times after liposuction: After a tumescent liposuction patients can get up and walk out of the office themselves, and are usually back to their regular routine in a couple of days.
